What are the common menstrual irregularities?

Common menstrual irregularities includes,

  • Menses pain
  • Heavy menstrual flow
  • Irregular menstrual cycle
  • Spotting and etc.

may be caused by hormonal imbalance or medical underlying cause such as fibroid and others.

Sources of endogenous (produced naturally by body) Estrogen, Progesterone, Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and Luteinizing Hormone (LH) during a typical 28 days menstrual cycle

Hormone Estrogen Progesterone FSH LH
Day / Source Days 1 – 5 Growing Follicles Adrenal Glands Pituitary Gland Pituitary Gland
Days 6 – 13 Dominant Follicle Adrenal Glands
Day 14 Dominant Follicle Dominant Follicle
Days 15 – 28 Corpus Luteum Corpus Luteum

Growing Follicles: 3 to 30 follicles in the ovaries that growing and maturing in response to FSH during Days 1 – 5.

Dominant Follicle: the 1 out of the initial 3 – 30 follicle continue to grow and maturing during Days 6 – 13 of the menstrual cycle.

Corpus Luteum: means yellow body in Latin, it is formed by the ruptured follicle after ovulation.

Adrenal Glands: the two glands located on top of the kidneys.

Pituitary Gland: is located at the base of the brain and is attached to the hypothalamus.

What is hormonal imbalance?

Hormonal balance among Estrogen, Progesterone, Follicle Stimulating Hormone, and Luteinizing Hormone is the key to the flawless rotation of menstrual cycle during the child bearing age in women.

Hormone imbalance is caused primarily by the incorrect relationship between Estrogen and Progesterone, which co-exist in a delicate balance levels in the body and mutually antagonize (act against) or “check and balance” the effects of each other, thus making possible the cyclic nature of ovulation, fertilization, implantation and gestation in human reproduction.

Hormonal imbalance may be caused by poor health, declining hormones production, stress and other reasons.

When the hormones are imbalance, the woman will experience menstruation irregularities such as menses pain, irregular menstrual cycle, heavy menstrual flow, spotting and etc.

Declining endogenous Estrogen level and skin aging

The endogenous Estrogen production gradually decreased after the peak around 25 – 26 years old coincide with the aging process going through female’s life till menopause.

Decreasing endogenous Estrogen causes,

  • A reduction in collagen and elastin production
  • A reduction of water-holding Hyaluronic Acid production
  • Reduced oil gland function resulting in less oil production

Thus, creates dramatic changes that have a negative impact on the skin. This is recognised as Hormonal Aging.

Signs of Hormonal Aging

  • Medium to deep wrinkles and creases
  • Sagginess or lack of skin firmness
  • Dull tone, blotchiness or rough texture
  • Dry and thin skin

The Hormonal Aging is separate but will aggravate the effect of the other two forms of aging the skincare industry has always focused on

  1. Chronologic Aging– skin continues to age directly as one gets older
  2. Environmental Aging – skin age due to sun damage, tanning and pollution

The declining hormone production causes dry, wrinkled and sagging skin and less youthful look; this is part of the inevitable aging process.

What Happens If The Dominant Follicle Fails To Grow, Maturing and Develop Properly?

Less endogenous Estrogen is produced and causes,

1.  The endogenous Estrogen production is lower than the optimum level according to age and may cause

i) early skin aging

ii)early menopause

2.  The Estrogen level may not be sufficiently high to trigger the LH surge to rupture the Dominant Follicle

i)  egg is not release and causes a cycle without ovulation which affects the chance for pregnancy

ii) Corpus Luteum is not form and the production of Estrogen and Progesterone is affected

Thus causes the hormonal imbalance that normally manifests the menstruation irregularities symptoms such as menses pain, too frequent or too few menstrual cycles, heavy menstrual flow, spotting and etc.

Therefore, it is very crucial to ensure for the Dominant Follicle to grow, maturing and develop properly.
